LA Kings among 8 GREAT teams that NO ONE READS about

0

The best teams should get the most coverage; in a perfect sporting world. Almost all the teams on this list do get some coverage. Most of them sell tickets to their games, and have a decent sized fanbase. Only one team, the program in the #1 slot, is a program that nobody cares about. Even though that program is solid and consistent.

The market is saturated- that’s what all these teams have in common. For a whole host of different reasons. Basically, there is really no demand for any more coverage. Current supply is excess. The LA Kings, like the other seven teams on this list, would deserve the coverage they receive, maybe even more (they’re that good)…..if all media outlets were non-profit; serving the public interest only.

We’ll look at why these teams are all great, and the reasons why you just don’t click on stories about them. We’ll explain why

a.) more people should care about these teams and/or

b.) why those that do care, don’t read.

8. Chicago Blackhawks

Before we get started I must make clear that I’m not the only one who finds material on these teams eliciting apathy. I’ve talked to many content provider partners and friends who say they’ve also experienced crickets chirping on these topics.

What makes them great: two Cups in five years, three conference finals in that time. Hottest ticket in town. Totalitarian rebuild of entire franchise that was left for dead just seven years ago. Complete rags to riches story; overnight.

Why no one clicks on Blackhawks content:   I had to begin here, because it hits so close to home. In 2010, during the first Cup run Blackhawks content was really good to me. It moved the needle because I was one of the few writing about it who actually knew what I was talking about. By 2013, every slappy with a wifi connection felt like they had some groundbreaking insight to share. June was my worst month by far for traffic last year, during the second Hawks Cup run. On Chicago Now, the Blackhawks Stanley Cup material didn’t come even close to touching the mommy blogger crapola and the Cubs content in web traffic numbers. This year, Blackhawks content on this website did such poor numbers that we had to severely cut back. No one’s reading about them anymore. Why?

-It’s been done. There’s not much of anything left to be said about this team. “Winning fatigue” like during the 1990s with the Chicago Bulls set in.

-All these Blackhawks fans are just looking for an excuse to buy t-shirts, and get drunk. They don’t have hockey acumen.

-Up until 2008, the team’s policy on television broadcast was stuck in the 1940s. They lost generations of potential fans because Bill Wirtz was a complete idiot on this decision.

7. Jimmie Johnson

Why he’s great: 60 some cup wins and counting. Rooting for him in NASCAR is like rooting for the casino in roulette. Yes, this is a “team,” because JJ isn’t just a driver he’s part of a racing team.

Why you really don’t care: So predictable, so vanilla. So….yawn. Let’s move on to the next one, I’m getting so bored by even describing it.

6. Ohio State Basketball

Why they’re great: they own the Big Ten Tournament the way Charles Barkley owns the NBA on TNT. Buckeyes have a tradition of hardwood excellence. They’ve had legendary players and made deep NCAA Tournament runs.

Why writing about them is a waste of everyone’s time: They’re on national TV way too much. It’s just as easy to get sick of the team as a whole as it is to get sick of the over-exposed Aaron Craft. Oh, and there’s football. Which comes first, second…..ninth in Ohio.

5. Chicago White Sox

Why they’re solid: Won it all in ’05, took the division in ’08, were in first place for pretty much all of 2012. Yes, the division is a pathetic joke, but they’re almost always in contention. And they’re not just better than the Cubs, they’re light years better.

Why I’m only writing about them when some really weird or extremely news worthy happens: the fans never show up (30th in attendance). Hawk Harrelson makes their television broadcasts unwatchable. And prior to Comcast SportsNet Chicago, the franchise a long series of DUMB decisions with their broadcast rights. They missed out on generations of additional fans.

4. Los Angeles Kings

What makes them special: greatest player in hockey history suited up for them, they’re about to win their second Stanley Cup in three years. By far the best, and only interesting/entertaining Twitter account in all of sports.

Why posting about them any more is a huge waste of your time and mine: all the stereotypes about Los Angeles “sports fans” and hockey ring true here. Yes, the NHL was once considered the fourth major professional sport in America. But they destroyed themselves with lockouts and moronic tv deals than were inexplicable. Maybe the LA Kings flying under the radar like this reminds us that Southern California really doesn’t deserve to have a NFL team again?

And for the hockey zealots who may be offended by this, yes I feel your pain. My favorite sport, college basketball, is considered the most important game of all for one month every year, and then no one else but me cares about it the rest of the year. So I know what it feels like to have your game at the top of the pecking order…only to be knocked down several pegs, all the time. Solidarity my brothers and sisters!

The LA Kings are indicative of hockey as a whole…..although LA Kings Coach Darryl Sutter isn’t doing his small part to help the cause. The test of the emergency broadcast system is more entertaining to watch than Sutter meeting the media.

3. Florida Gators Basketball

What makes them great: see their national titles, the way they co-dominate the SEC with Kentucky.

Why gearing your content around them is a great way to fail: football school. and that’s just too ingrained in the culture to change. And look at their base, those people are not a basketball loving people.

Tom Izzo Final Four

2. Michigan State Football

I’m sorry @LarryVonKurtze, one of my favorite Twitter follows/followers/tweet inter-actors. This list is littered with your teams. I can’t help it, this is what the numbers and the stats say.

Why they’re elite: Mark Dantonio has built the program back into the national power that it was under Duffy Daugherty in the 1950s and 1960s. They rule the Big ten now.

Why I really want to write about them much much more, but can’t: As a Spartan myself I can say this #SpartansWill be too busy going out and getting bombed to go look up and read internet articles about their team. Because spilling drinks on yourself is an example of #SpartanProblems

Oh and Tom Izzo made it a basketball school to a whole generation of sports consumers. There’s also the big brother of Michigan thing; even though MSU has been dominating lately. And the Spartans are rising in a conference that is in decline.

1. Notre Dame Basketball

NO ONE CARES.

Mike Brey can accomplish all the regular season victories, NO ONE CARES. All the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament exits, NO ONE CARES. Hey, there’s ND spring football to talk about…what about the ND hoops team that’s currently first in conference play? NO ONE CARES

Hey, we just beat all these ranked teams at the Joyce Center….NO ONE CARES. We had the Big East Player of the Year when the Big East meant something…NO ONE CARES.

The NCAA Tournament is everything, and this team always bombs in those games. Oh and football comes first through 37th in South Bend, so that hurts too.
